Kuznetsova through after scare in Prague

Svetlana Kuznetsova survived a scare to reach the quarter-finals of the Prague Open with a 5-7 6-4 6-3 victory over Madison Brengle on Wednesday.

Having dropped two service games late in the first set to hand her opponent the initiative, Kuznetsova looked to have thrown away an opportunity to claw her way back into the match when she squandered two set points in the second.

But the Russian recovered well to break in the next game and clinch the set before wrapping up the victory at the end of a scrappy third, with Monica Puig up next following her 6-4 6-4 win over Barbora Krejcikova.

Lucie Safarova headed a trio of Czech seeds to safely negotiate their way into the last eight.

Having come from behind to see off Mariana Duque-Marino in the first round, the second seed went 6-4 in front against compatriot Lucie Hradecka, who retired hurt at 2-0 down in the second set.

Hsieh Su-wei awaits Safarova in the next round following her 6-4 2-6 6-1 triumph over Ana Konjuh, while defending champion Karolina Pliskova and Barbora Strycova complete a strong home contingent in the quarters.

Pliskova made short work of Katerina Siniakova in a 6-2 6-4 victory and Strycova prevailed 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 in her match versus Jana Cepelova.

The next hurdle in Pliskova's defence of her title will be Italy's Camila Giorgi - a 6-1 7-5 winner over qualifier Virginie Razzano - while Strycova will face fourth seed Sam Stosur, who rounded off the day's action with a 6-3 6-4 win against Marketa Vondrousova.
