Pietersen out of IPL, facing lengthy lay-off with 'horrible' calf tear

Kevin Pietersen has announced he will be out of action until November after tearing a calf muscle while playing in the Indian Premier League.

Pietersen was signed by new franchise Rising Pune Supergiants for the 2016 IPL season, but had to be helped from the field after facing just one ball in Friday's loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The 35-year-old batsman, who has featured in a host of T20 leagues around the world following his high-profile axing from the England set-up in 2014, hurt himself as he set off for a single and immediately called for assistance.

After undergoing a scan on his injury, Pietersen provided an update via his official Instagram page on Saturday.

It read: "Over & out, India! Injuries are all part of the job! Horrible tear in my calf!

"Sad to be leaving a really great bunch of boys but look forward to being back with my family.

"London bound for a summer off! Vacation till November! Bye for now! Lots of love, KP xxx"

In addition to missing the remainder of the Supergiants' IPL campaign, Pietersen is also set to miss this year's Caribbean Premier League.
