Penguins thrash Devils, Red Wings beaten


Evgeni Malkin helped the Pittsburgh Penguins strengthen their grip on an NHL play-off place after a 6-1 win over the New Jersey Devils.

Malkin scored twice as the Penguins, who hold a wildcard spot in the Eastern Conference, pulled seven points clear of the Devils.

Bryan Rust had three points thanks to his goal and two assists, while Matthew Murray made 17 saves.

Alongside the Penguins in the wildcard places are the Detroit Red Wings, who suffered a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Blackhawks are top of the Central Division and had goaltender Corey Crawford to thank after his 33 saves.

The New York Islanders edged city rivals the Rangers 6-4 in a rollercoaster clash at Madison Square Garden.

There were seven goals scored in the first period but the encounter was locked at 4-4 in the third, when Cal Clutterbuck and Frans Nielsen scored for the Islanders.

Elsewhere, Cam Talbot made 39 saves to see the Edmonton Oilers overcome the Winnipeg Jets 2-1.

A fast start helped the St Louis Blues beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2 and the Dallas Stars were 2-1 winners against the Ottawa Senators.
