Cibulkova on track for second Acapulco title, Stephens into semis

Dominika Cibulkova's quest for a second Abierto Mexicano Telcel crown is still alive after she rallied to beat sixth seed Johanna Larsson in the quarter-finals.

Cibulkova dropped the opening set but the 2014 champion fought back to win 3-6 6-2 6-3 at the WTA event in Acapulco on Thursday.

Larsson benefited from a wayward Cibulkova in the first set after the Slovak tallied four double faults, won just 10 of 23 points on first serve and was broken four times.

But 2014 Australian Open runner-up Cibulkova stepped it up a gear in the next two sets, breaking serve on six occasions to seal a semi-final berth following the one hour, 56-minute battle.

Next up for Cibulkova in the semis is Christina McHale in a rematch of the final two years ago.

American McHale, who lost to Cibulkova in three sets in 2014, withstood the challenge of Mirjana Lucic-Baroni to triumph 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-2.

Seeds Sloane Stephens (second) and Yanina Wickmayer (eighth) will contest the other semi-final.

Stephens was a class above as she accounted for Naomi Osaka 6-4 7-5.

As for Belgian Wickmayer, she stunned third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3 7-6 (7-3).
