Last season's beaten Super League Grand Finalist' Wigan Warriors began their 2016 campaign with a hard-fought 12-6 victory over the Catalans Dragons on Friday.
Michael McIlorum touched down twice in three first-half minutes and, despite Justin Horo's score two minutes after the break, there was no way back for Catalans.
The deadlock was broken when McIlorum capitalised on a spill and he crossed the whitewash again soon after, Matty Smith atoning for his earlier miss with the conversion.
Horo's converted try cut the gap, but Smith's 56th-minute penalty proved to be the last score of the match.
St Helens emerged victorious in their season opener with a 30-16 win over the Huddersfield Giants.
Mark Percival led the way with two tries, while Atelea Vea, Jordan Turner and Luke Thompson all got on the scoreboard, with Luke Walsh making all five of his conversions.
Aaron Murphy, Ukuma Ta'ai and Jake Connor were the scorers for the Giants, with Danny Brough and Jamie Ellis finishing with a conversion each.
Elsewhere, Hull FC made an early statement of intent with a 42-20 triumph over Salford Red Devils, as eight different try scorers got in on the act.
