Lightning rumble on, Sabres defeat Canadiens

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov scored a goal and picked up an assist in a 3-1 home win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.

After a scoreless first period, J.T. Brown put the Lightning on the scoreboard but Gustav Nyquist hit back for the Red Wings shortly afterwards.

However, Tyler Johnson managed to put the Lightning back in front on the power-play just a minute later, before Kucherov wrapped up the result in the third period.

Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop made 24 saves to help his side make it seven straight home victories, and nine wins out of their past 10 fixtures.

James McGinn, Johan Larsson and Brian Gionta scored in the third period as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-2.

The Sabres took the lead through Marcus Foligno inside the first five minutes, but goals from Dale Weise and Alex Galchenyuk had the Canadiens up 2-1 after the second period.

However, three unanswered goals from the Sabres saw them run away with the victory, condemning the Canadiens to a ninth loss from their past 10 games.

Sean Monahan had a goal and three assists in a career-high four-point game as the Calgary Flames accounted for the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1.

Two goals within 18 seconds saw the game tied 1-1 midway through the first period, before the Flames scored twice in the second period through Mark Giordano and Johnny Gaudreau to give them a 3-1 lead.

Monahan extended their advantage to three goals early in the final period as the Flames ended a three-game losing streak.
