Khawaja misses out for ODI opener

Usman Khawaja's unlucky run continued after he was overlooked for Australia's first one-day international against New Zealand.

The in-form left-hander was added to the squad to replace Aaron Finch, who suffered a hamstring injury in the second Twenty 20 against India on Friday.

Khawaja starred in the Test series against New Zealand and West Indies before impressing in the Big Bash League, but he has struggled for international limited-overs opportunities.

That trend will continue after captain Steve Smith confirmed Shaun Marsh will open with David Warner in his side's first ODI against New Zealand in Auckland on Wednesday.

"He's unlucky to miss out but Shaun's going to get the first opportunity," Smith told a news conference.

"He'll play one of the games at least. He does need a hit going into what is a big Test series and he's batting extremely well.

"[Marsh] deserves the first opportunity."

Paceman Josh Hazlewood returns after being rested for the bulk of the limited-overs series against India.

Australia have opted to go without a front-line spinner as Adam Zampa missed out, leaving the duties to Glenn Maxwell.
