Muguruza brushes past Flipkens

Updated:

Garbine Muguruza overcame Kirsten Flipkens in straight sets to book her place in the Australian Open third round.

The Spanish third seed was challenged far more greatly than in her opener, but still came away with a 6-4 6-2 win on Rod Laver Arena on Thursday.

Muguruza was particularly tested during a first set when there were three breaks of serve, but one in the seventh game was crucial.

The 2015 Wimbledon runner-up improved in the second and lost just four points on her way to a 3-0 lead before closing out her win.

Just as in the first round, Muguruza wanted to come forward and she had decent success, winning 16 of 25 points at the net.

Muguruza has never been beyond the fourth round at Melbourne Park, although that appears set to change this year.
