Wilder retains WBC heavyweight title with brutal knockout

Deontay Wilder has retained the WBC world heavyweight championship, defeating Polish challenger Artur Szpilka with a brutal ninth-round knockout.

It was not a pretty finish as Szpilka looked inside for an opening only to be clobbered by a heavy straight right hand to the jaw that sent the challenger spiralling to the floor.

Szpilka was stretchered out of the arena as a result.

The Polish boxer started the fight well and looked the bigger aggressor of the two as Wilder adopted a more measured approach, looking to avoid any direct hits and land his counter punches.

The champ had some struggles coming to grips with Szpilka's southpaw stance, but once he found his mark he did not miss.

Earlier in the night, Charlies Martin won the vacant IBF heavyweight championship, defeating an injured Vyacheslav Glazkov who lost after falling and tearing his ACL in the third round.
