Sharks hit seven past Maple Leafs, Caps win in OT

The San Jose Sharks responded from their loss to the Detroit Red Wings with a 7-0 demolition of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL on Saturday.

Tomas Hertl contributed with two goals and two assists as the Sharks matched the Nashville Predators - 7-0 against the Winnipeg Jets - for the largest margin of victory in the league this season.

The Sharks blew the Maple Leafs away in the second period, scoring four goals after a scoreless opening 20 minutes.

Those in attendance at the SAP Centre in San Jose were then treated to another three goals in the third period as the Maple Leafs' defence failed to cope with the rampant home side.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 499th NHL goal 85 seconds into overtime to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 win against the New York Rangers.

Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom tied the game with under six seconds left on the clock to send the game into OT, after the Rangers had come from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead.

Mark Stones scored with 37.5 seconds left of overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a 2-1 win against the Boston Bruins, while the Philadelphia Flyers shutout the New York Islanders 4-0.

The Pittsburgh Penguins continued their resurgence with a 3-1 victory against the Montreal Canadiens, while a clinical second period saw the Minnesota Wild past the Dallas Stars 2-1.

Tobias Rieder scored twice as the Arizona Coyotes blanked the Predators 4-0, the Tampa Bay Lightning got up 3-2 in overtime against the Vancouver Canucks, and the St Louis Blues trumped the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 in a shoot-out.
