Kevin Chappell shot a five-under 65 in the second round of the RSM Classic to move into pole position.
Chappell is featuring in just his fourth event on the PGA Tour this season and remains in the hunt for a maiden tournament triumph.
After three birdies in the first 10 holes of the Seaside Course, he hit a bogie when he three-putted on the par-three 12th.
But Chappell produced an eagle at 15 with a delightful example of his short-game abilities, holing out from the bunker from 45 yards.
Having led going into Friday's second round, Kevin Kisner went round in three under after also dropping a shot at 12.
He slipped to joint second alongside Freddie Jacobson following the Swede's round of 67.
Graeme McDowell carded a 68 on the Plantation Course to put him at seven under and tied for ninth after two rounds, the highlight of his round being a 20-foot birdie on the par-three 7th hole.
Boo Weekley was one of the highest risers, moving up 75 places after following up a level round with a four-under 66 on the Seaside Course.
Sam Saunders went over by four shots on the Plantation Course to slide outside the top 100, while Robert Karlsson joined him in missing the cut courtesy of his 74.
