Shvedova progresses in Taipei, Babos through

Yaroslava Shvedova started her attempt to win back-to-back titles by beating Marina Melnikova in the first round of the OEC Taipei WTA Challenger on Wednesday.

Shvedova was victorious against Naomi Osaka in the Hua Hin Championships final on Sunday and saw off fellow Russian Melnikova 6-0 6-4 in the opening round of the 125K event three days later.

Melnikova was unable to force a solitary break point against the second seed, who claimed four breaks to move into the second round with minimum fuss.

Fourth seed Timea Babos was also a straight-sets winner in the first round, getting the better of Tena Lukas 7-5 6-3.

There was to be no upset for home wildcard Chan Chin-wei, as the rank outsider was hammered 6-2 6-0 by Zhang Kai-lin.

Kirsten Flipkens, seeded fifth, Elise Mertens and Amandine Hesse also advanced to the second round on day three of the tournament.
