Elina Svitolina crashed out of the Open de Limoges on Wednesday as Pauline Parmentier caused an upset in their first-round clash.
Top seed and world number 19 Svitolina was overwhelming favourite to progress to round two, but came unstuck as Parmentier - who is some 97 places below the Ukrainian in the WTA rankings - pulled off a shock by winning 6-4 4-6 7-6 (8-6).
There were no such problems for third seed Caroline Garcia, who survived a first-set scare against Ekaterina Alexandrova to advance to round two with a 1-6 6-2 7-5 victory.
Sixth seed Margarita Gasparyan was in second-round action, and she overcame the challenge of Maryna Zanevska with ease, winning 6-2 6-4.
Donna Vekic, seeded seven, is also into the last eight after she beat Carina Witthoft 3-6 6-2 6-1, while Wednesday's other first-round encounter saw French wildcard Mathilde Johansson defeat compatriot Julie Coin 4-6 6-3 6-4.
