British rivals to square up and have words in world Scrabble final

It will be a war of words today as two British men battle it out to become world Scrabble champion.

Brett Smitheram, 37, from Chingford in east London, will take on Mark Nyman, 49, from Knutsford in Cheshire, in a bid to be crowned chief wordsmith.

The World Scrabble Championship 2016 final is taking place at the Grand Palais in Lille, France, on Sunday.

Mr Smitheram, a top rated player, is a recruitment consultant and UK champion in 2000 as well as a quarter finalist in the 2014 world contest.

Mr Nyman is a writer and former world Scrabble champion in 1993 as well as four time UK champion. He was also a producer on Channel 4's Countdown.

Organisers said the final will kick off at 11am French time.
