Man held over 'attempted burglary' at Wayne Rooney's mansion

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary at the home of England football captain Wayne Rooney.

The suspect, who is from the Scarborough area, was arrested on Tuesday over the break-in bid at Rooney's Cheshire mansion while he played in his testimonal match at Old Trafford last week.

The alarm at the Manchester United star's £6 million property in Prestbury was reportedly triggered and police descended to conduct a full search of the area.

The Rooneys' family home was targeted as the striker, his wife Coleen and their three sons Kai, Klay and Kit were at the charity tribute game against his first club Everton on Wednesday August 3.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "Officers investigating an attempted burglary in Prestbury have arrested a man in relation to the incident.

"The 24-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of attempted burglary.

"The arrest relates to an attempted burglary that occurred at approximately 9.00pm on Wednesday 3rd August at an address in the Chelford Road area of Prestbury.

"The man, who is from the Scarborough area, is currently being held in police custody where he is assisting officers with their inquiries."
