Giant sinkhole swallows Australian couple's backyard

A sinkhole filled with water opened up in the garden of home in Australia.

The residents, Lynn and Ray McKay, woke up on Tuesday morning to find the hole in their back lawn in Ipswich, Brisbane.

They quickly called Queensland Urban Utilities who determined it had not been caused by sewage pipes as first assumed, reports the Brisbane Times.

It's thought the sinkhole may have been caused by a disused mine shaft that had been filled in with timber, only for it to have rotted over the years.

The sinkhole marks a second property disaster for the McKays who suffered in the 2011 Queensland floods.
