Mystery death of soldier found unconscious in Brecon town centre

Police are investigating the unexplained death of a soldier in a Welsh town centre.

The soldier, who has not been identified, was found injured and unconscious on Lion Street in Brecon, Carmarthenshire at about 1am on Sunday.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the man was taken to hospital by ambulance but later died. His death is being treated as unexplained.

It is understood the soldier was not wearing army uniform and there was nothing to indicate his death was linked to extremism.

An Army spokesman said: "We are aware of an incident involving the death of a soldier in Brecon.

"Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time."

The area has been cordoned off and police are appealing for anyone who was in the Lion Street, Bethel Square, Tredegar Street and High Street areas between 12.30am and 1.30am to get in touch.

A force spokeswoman said: "Dyfed-Powys Police are investigating the death of a man in Brecon.

"Officers received a report of an unconscious and injured male discovered on Lion Street at around 1am on Sunday May 8.

"He was conveyed to hospital by ambulance. He has sadly since passed away. The death is being treated as unexplained at this time.

"A police investigation is ongoing. The scene has been preserved as part of the investigation.

"We are making an appeal for anyone in Lion Street, Bethel Square, Tredegar Street and High Street between 12.30am and 1.30am to call 101."

Kirsty Williams, the Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire, described the incident as "shocking".

She tweeted: "Clearly very shocking incident unfolding in Brecon town centre this morning. Will be keeping in touch with local police."
