Man remanded on murder bid charge as axe attack police officer named

A police officer who was seriously injured when she was attacked with an axe has been named in court as Lisa Bates.

Nathan Sumner, 35, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court accused of attempting to murder Pc Bates in the Gleadless area of the city on Wednesday evening.

Sumner, with an obvious injury to his left eye, entered the dock in handcuffs, and surrounded by seven police officers, some in body armour.

More officers were deployed in the court, outside the dock.

Sumner, of Plowright Close, Sheffield, was remanded in custody to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on May 13.
