A British woman has died in the French Alps after reportedly hitting a tree while skiing.

The 53-year-old was skiing on a blue run, an area of piste usually graded as suitable for novices, in the popular resort of La Plagne when she lost control and hit a tree on Monday morning, according to reports in French media.

The woman, who has not been named, received treatment from a mountain rescue team but died of her injuries at the scene. An investigation into the incident was under way.

The Foreign Office confirmed it was providing assistance to the victim's family and was liaising with local officials.

A spokeswoman said: "We are supporting the family of a British national who has sadly died in Macot le Plagne, France, and remain in contact with the French authorities over the incident."
