Residents evacuated after unexploded Second World War bomb discovered

The discovery of an unexploded Second World War bomb prompted the evacuation of residents in an east London street.

Metropolitan Police were called to Grange Road, Plaistow, in Newham just before 4pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The Met's Newham branch posted two images of the ordnance on Twitter, adding: "Please bear with us whilst we work to make safe some suspected WW1 or WW2 ordnance found in Grange Road."

Some buildings had been evacuated as a precaution and an exclusion zone was set up.

Within two hours, officers advised the ordnance had been "safely dealt with" and local roads were re-opened.

Last August, a 250kg bomb was found by builders at a site in Temple Street, Bethnal Green, before it was safely detonated by the Army.

It was believed to have been dropped over London during German bombing raids in the early 1940s but did not detonate, and had the capacity to "cause mass destruction" if detonated, authorities had warned.
