Gogglebox scoops award at top documentaries ceremony

Updated

Gogglebox and The Paedophile Hunter have been named among the best documentaries at a top awards ceremony.

The Channel 4 hits won gongs at the Grierson Trust's 43rd British Documentary Awards bash in London.

The Paedophile Hunter, screened last year, won Best Documentary on a Contemporary Theme, and was praised by the jury for its "provocative and confident" take on the issue.

The programme followed self-styled undercover reporter Stinson Hunter posing online as an under-age child and being approached by men sending explicit messages, videos and pictures and arranging to meet up.

They are then lured to a house where they are confronted, filmed with handheld cameras and mobile phones, and asked to explain themselves before Hunter hands the evidence to the police and publishes it on his website.

In 2013, a 45-year-old man, Michael Parkes, took his own life after being questioned by police as a result of Hunter's work.

Meanwhile, Gogglebox, now Channel 4's number one-rated programme, with consolidated viewing figures nearing five million for series five, won the Most Entertaining Documentary award.

The jury singled out the series for being "a powerful snapshot of what life is like in Britain in the 21st century and a love song to the simple pleasure of spending quality time with the people you love".

Channel 4 was the channel that screened other winners including Curing Cancer, which won Best Science or Natural History Documentary, and The Romanians are Coming, which won Best Documentary Series.

Other winners included the BBC's Our War: Goodbye Afghanistan, which won the award for Best Documentary on Current Affairs, and Our World War: The First Day, also shown on the BBC, which won the award for Best Historical Documentary.

Grayson Perry won Best Documentary Presenter for Who Are You? with the judges singling him out as "brilliant".

Jury chair, Lorraine Heggessey, said: "Grayson is an interviewer who gets under the skin of his subjects and an artist who captures their essence. He's one of our greatest national treasures."
