A search operation is under way off the coast of the Isle of Man after an unknown aircraft issued an emergency code.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said an "extensive search" was being carried out after RAF Kinloss in Scotland reported that an aircraft had been lost on the radar.

A search is under way between Northern Ireland and the south west of the Isle of Man.

Ryan Gray, senior maritime operations officer at the UK Coastguard, said: "We also issued a mayday relay in the area, which means that other merchant shipping are also keeping a lookout for this aircraft."
