Katie Derham and Anton Du Beke top Strictly Come Dancing leaderboard

BBC Radio 3's Katie Derham has soared to the top of the Strictly Come Dancing leaderboard.

Derham and her partner Anton Du Beke scored the leading total of 33, just one point ahead of the next four couples tied on 32.

The couple performed a Viennese Waltz to Elvis Presley's If I Can Dream and closed the show in style.

Not even judge Craig Revel Horwood could fault them, saying it was "absolutely incredible", adding: "I don't know how you learnt that in a week, I really do not know."

Bookies' favourite Peter Andre and his partner Janette Manrara are among the four couples tied for second place alongside EastEnders' Kellie Bright and Kevin Clifton, singer Jamelia and Tristan MacManus, and Call The Midwife's Helen George and Aljaz Skorjanec.

Andre's Tango was praised as head judge Len Goodman said: "I don't know what card game you were playing but there was plenty of snap in the tango!"

Actress George was praised for her dancing skills, with Revel Horwood even telling her she is an "incredible dancer".

It was not as good an evening for last week's hit performer, pop star Jay McGuiness, who toppled from the leading spot.

Last week The Wanted singer and partner Aliona Vilani wowed the judges and brought the house down with a slick jive that earned them the first 10 of the series.

This week McGuiness stumbled during his quickstep and went from last week's score of 37 to 25.

Judge Darcey Bussell told him: "It was such a shame ... I got so excited when you started off ... this was going to be your dance again ... but with those mistakes ... I know you can come back stronger next week."

Goodman told him his "feet were doing more than his brain could handle".

TV presenter Anita Rani and her partner Gleb Savchenko opened the show with a sizzling samba.

Judge Bruno Tonioli told them it was "a bit on and off".

BBC Breakfast's Carol Kirkwood had a much better week, scoring 22 points for her paso.

Revel Horwood told her: "Well I think this is the first time we've seen your body engage in any dance which I think is very exciting ... well done and what an improvement."

Celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott bounced back from last week's disastrous cha cha cha with partner Natalie Lowe.

This week their waltz to Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful World had the judges raving.

Goodman said: "Well done," while Bussell praised them for showing off a lot of detail.

The bottom position is held by Jeremy Vine and Karen Clifton, whose Jive to Bobby Darin's Splish Splash was described by Revel Horwood as "like watching a stork that had been struck by lightning".
