Prince Philip has finally retired: he'll be 96 when he finally hangs up his ribbon-cutting scissors. Buckingham Palace has announced that he will attend any events he has already been scheduled to appear at between now and August, but he won't be accepting any more invitations. The Queen, meanwhile, will soldier on. She's a mere 91 years old, and so must have plenty more years in her yet.

Prince Philip has arguably earned his retirement. He's managed an impressive schedule of events given his age, and carried out 110 days of engagements in 2016 - as the fifth busiest member of the Royal family. He has been the Queen's official companion for 70 years - which is a long working life for anyone.

Oldest worker?

Over the years there have been a surprising number of older people working 10, 20, 30 or even 40 years after most people their age have stopped. We have tracked down five impressive examples:

1. Monica Evans from Warwickshire reached a milestone last month - after spending 70 years with the same firm. She started at the company at 19 and is now 89, but has no plans to stop work in the immediate future.

2. Great-Grandad Tom Brogan has been named as the UK's oldest supermarket employee. He originally retired at the age of 63, but was bored, so returned to work as an Asda car park attendant in Robin Park, Wigan. He has held the job for more than 20 years, and is now 91.

3. Sid Prior also made it to 96 - in fact he was almost 97 by the time he retired from his meet and greet role at B&Q's New Malden branch in West London. He started out in his 70s, thinking it would be a nice hobby for a while, and stayed for more than 20 years.

4. Dolly Saville, a Great-Grandmother from Buckinghamshire, held the title of the world's oldest barmaid, as she continued work at the Red Lion in Wendover until she was 100. She worked full time, six days a week, until she was 94 - and went part time after that. She passed away at the age of 100 in 2015.

5. Buster Martin, meanwhile, worked to the astonishing age of 104. From the age of 99 he was cleaning vans for a London plumbing firm, and he even clocked on the day he turned 100. He worked up until the day before he died. His doesn't hold any official records, however, as he was born in France and raised in an orphanage in the UK, and says he never had a birth certificate.
