It's the ultimate hideaway - a 'secret' flat within the old town walls of Berwick in Northumberland that can only be accessed via a tunnel.

Owned by magazine editor Jim Perry and partner Susie Seui since the 1980s, it's now up for sale privately as the couple are moving to Helmsdale in the Scottish Highlands.

To reach the flat, dubbed the Hole in the Wall, means entering a covered stone passage, set at an angle to the rest of the street. It leads into a part of the town wall that was adapted in the 1800s to create a granary for a whisky company.

"At some point the whole of the granary burned down and it was rebuilt and owned by the Salvation Army," Susie tells Chronicle Live.

"By the time we bought it the property had been a music maker's shop and then it was converted into housing."

Indeed, a two-bedroom flat within the granary is also currently for sale for £115,000 through Purple Bricks - although this has a rather more conventional means of entrance.

Jim and Susie had been looking for a base in the area when an archaeologist friend spotted the Hole in the Wall for sale, and they fell in love with it immediately.

Since then, the property has been insulated and double glazed to create a charming and good-sized one-bedroom flat with a secluded courtyard garden.

The oldest part of the Berwick town walls date back to the 14th century, when they were built to defend the town during battles between English and Scottish soldiers.

They were replaced in the sixteenth century and altered over the years, and are now Grade I listed, as well as being a scheduled monument.

Along with the quirky flat, the walls house a number of restaurants, guest houses and other businesses, as well as a small number of other homes.

The couple is also selling another tiny property, called The Lookout - a tiny building with a view over the River Tweed that comes with its own storage unit - or man-cave.

Interested buyers can contact Jim at Suite12@Turamail.co.uk to receive particulars and details of an open day.
