Quarter coins in the US are relatively nominal in value, translating as around 17 pence in the UK, but that didn't stop one man in America from going to jail for stealing them.

Sammy Paul Buskirk, 22, from Pennsylvania has been accused of stealing 50 envelopes containing quarters which made up a total of $200.

Buskirk got his hands on this money by sawing a hole into his adjoining neighbour's home.

According to the state police on 4 December Buskirk used tools to create a hole in common wall that separates their basements.

He then allegedly went into the victim's home and stole the money which was in the living room.

Court documents reveal that the young man's neighbour, Anna Kish, 'arrived home from church and saw sheet-rock-like material on the steps and shelves of her basement, where she also found a hole in the wall covered by a t-shirt'.

Kish also discovered that 50 envelopes she had filled with coins had disappeared.

Officers were given permission to search Buskirk's home by his mother.

Once inside they found a jigsaw and a covered hole on their side of the basement too.

The young man was arrested and charged with multiple crimes including criminal trespassing, burglary and drug-related offences.

According to the Morning Call Buskirk was sent to country prison with bail set at $50,000.
