Man's Home Demolished While He Was Away Recovering From Surgery

When you eventually head back home after a few weeks holiday you can often find that your house is in need of a bit of attention, but for one man, his break from home turned out slightly differently.

In December last year Phil Williams underwent knee surgery and then spent the next few months recuperating in Florida.

He was absolutely devastated to see what had become of his house in West Hempstead, Long Island, when he returned home.

Mr Williams' house of nearly 70 years had been entirely demolished.

He said: "Nothing was left... it was gone."

The city says they were responding to complaints from neighbours who deemed the house an eyesore and a potential hazard.

Officials also claimed that they had sent several letters, held a hearing and followed all other protocols before tearing the home down.

Mr Williams does admit that he didn't keep up with his mail while he was away but still maintains that the house was not in as bad condition as the neighbours say.

He also pointed out that the mortgage and tax were up to date. Williams is currently in the midst of filing a law suit against the town.
