A specially adapted Porsche owned by Steve McQueen - the last he ever bought - is soon to go up for auction where it is expected to make as much as £1 million.

The actor was a big motoring enthusiast, and bought the grey 930 Turbo Carrera in 1976. And while it would normally be worth between £60,000 and £80,000, its history is likely to send the price sky-high.

The car was adapted at the actor's request to include a 'kill button' - a dashboard switch that would turn off the rear lights if he was chased by the police on Mulholland Drive.

McQueen kept it until 1978, since when it's had a series of owners and put 150,000 miles on the clock.

The car was the fastest Porsche had ever made, with a top speed of 153mph and a 0-60mph time of 5.2 seconds. It was powered by a rare early production non-intercooled 3.0 litre engine.

McQueen's has a sunroof, dual mirrors, a black interior with sport seats and eight-inch front and nine-inch rear wheels which he had added later.

Chad McQueen, the actor's son, once took the Porsche for a joyride.

"The acceleration at the time was phenomenal," he tells the Western Morning News. "The car is rich in history. This is the last of the McQueen cars."

According to Mecum Auctions, the unnamed owner plans to give part of the proceeds to The Boys Republic, a non-profit treatment community for troubled teenagers in Chino Hills, California.

McQueen attended The Boys Republic in 1946, and later said it was the one place that turned his life around.

The £1 million price tag may seem a big mark-up, given the usual price for the car. But it isn't unlikely, given the prices that some of McQueen's other cars have achieved in the past. In 2011, a 1966 Porsche 911 that he'd owned sold for £830,000, and last year his old Ferrari 275 GTB sold for £6 million - four times the estimate.

The car forms part of an auction to be held in Monterey, California by Mecum Auctions between August 13th and 15th this year.
