A house built into an outcrop of rocks in the Arizona desert has gone on the market for $4.3 million.

Once described by former CEO of Neiman Marcus Stanley Marcus as 'the most original home in America', the Boulder House is built into an outcrop of granite boulders from the Precambrian era. These boulders represent more than 60% of the structure.

"There is no residence like this in the world, and it has a multitude of potential uses," say agents Estately.

The 4,380-square-foot house, which sits in nine acres of land, was built in 1980 and has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The kitchen is small but well-equipped.

Many of the walls are of natural rock, with others of an earthy stucco; the floor is made of poured concrete. Narrow, twisty corridors wind through the rocks, and some of the rooms are more like caves, with little natural light. The huge reception room is lit in part by the gaps between the rocks, which have been custom-filled with glass.

Outside, there's a large covered stucco terrace with superb views of the desert - and of the local Whisper Rock Golf Course.

The outcrop is believed to have been an encampment for Native American tribes. One bedroom has an alcove blackened with scorch marks, the remains of a prehistoric fireplace.

There's one spot where a gap between two slabs of stone allows a shaft of light to penetrate the house at the spring and autumn equinoxes, lighting up what may be a carved calendar on a wall.

Many other rocks also have twelfth-century engravings chiselled into them, earning the house a place on the National Register of Historic Places. But be warned: many of these are of female genitalia, in one case eight feet tall.

The current owners are members of the Yavapai-Apache tribe, who are selling it after 10 years ownership because they don't get to spend enough time there.
