Second biggest lottery jackpot in history

Lottery organisers in the US are waiting for two lucky winners to come forward and claim their share of an astonishing $580 million (£344 million) jackpot in the US Powerball lottery.

It's the second biggest jackpot of all time. So what could the money buy them?

It's the second biggest jackpot in US history, which grew after 16 draws didn't produce a winner, and the money rolled over.

The jackpot created a huge surge in ticket buying, which hit a rate of 130,000 a minute in the run-up to the draw. Then on Wednesday night the draw produced the numbers 5, 23, 16, 22, 29 and 6.

The statisticians calculated that Americans had a better chance of becoming a US President later in life than they did of winning. However, two winners beat the odds.

What to buy?

So what would a £170 million jackpot buy you? Sadly it wouldn't pay for Britain's most expensive home. That 45 bedroom seven story mansion in Knightsbridge would require almost double your winnings - although you could always share it with the other winner.

Alternatively you could buy one of the most expensive homes on sale in the US at the moment - as the most pricey mansions in Los Angeles and Miami are both on sale for $125 million. Or you could snap up one of the most expensive apartments in New York - which cost around £100 million.

That would give you enough change to snaffle the world's most expensive car - a title currently held by a 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe, which sold for $8.7 million in 1987.

Sadly, your yacht ambitions may have to wait. Roman Abramovich still holds the record for owning the world's most expensive yacht, and at a cost of $485 million you're not going to be able to challenge him for the title.

It just goes to show that however much money you have, there is always someone somewhere who is richer.

In the US, this isn't even the biggest ever jackpot. In a Mega Millions draw in the US in March three ticket buyers shared a $656 million jackpot - the biggest ever.

But what do you think? What would you buy? Let us know in the comments.
