Tesco recalls flavoured butters over food poisoning bug concerns

Tesco has recalled a range of flavoured butters amid concerns they could be contaminated with a potentially serious food poisoning bug.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said the butters may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause illness particularly among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, unborn and newborn babies, those aged over 60 and anyone with reduced immunity.

The bacteria causes the serious infection Listeriosis and can lead to conditions including meningitis.

Four of the butters are sold in 100g packs, while the other three are complimentary discs offered to customers at fresh meat and fish counters.

The affected products are Tesco Chocolate Chip and Maple Syrup Butter 100g, Tesco Red Chilli and Lemon Butter 100g, Tesco Roast Garlic and Herb Butter 100g and Tesco Three Peppercorn Butter 100g as well as the complimentary Counters Roast Garlic and Herb Butter Discs 10g, Counters Peppercorn Butter Discs 10g, Counters Chilli Butter Discs 10g, Counters Mr Crumb Roast Garlic and Herb Discs 10g and Counters Mr Crumb Chilli Butter Discs 10g.

All packs and all "use-by" dates of the listed butters are being recalled.

Customers are advised not to eat the butters and to return the affected products to Tesco.

A full refund will be given to customers and no receipt is required.
