And the negative attitude could mean they're setting themselves up for a failure. Only one third of those surveyed said they truly believed they would lose weight before starting a diet, and three quarters confessed to having daily negative thoughts about their body.

More than two thirds of those who did manage to lose weight said they had done so with a positive attitude. Almost 50 per cent of the women quizzed said words like 'beautiful' and 'sexy' made them feel better about themselves, and a quarter said being described as a 'real woman' had a positive effect.

The survey also revealed that just under a third of women start their diet on a Monday, despite feeling more positive about themselves on a Friday.

'Using more positive language can make all the difference and can unlock the potential for a whole new outlook and attitude to life... They need to focus more on these positive feelings to successfully lose weight and think about what they can gain."
