Research commissioned by the Watercress Alliance revealed that eating just 80g a day of the green superfood can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and blow away those blemishes and unsightly pores.
Watercress has long been used for New Year detoxing, as it is a powerful antioxidant.
But following research on mice, in which the carotene in the plant was found to stop an enzyme that causes collagen to break down, thereby creating wrinkles, the study on women volunteers was commissioned.
Of the female volunteers that took part in the study, nine out of 10 showed a visible improvement in their complexion after eating watercress daily for four weeks.
Not only did almost 50 per cent see a reduction in red or blotchy patches, but skin texture also improved for more than 70 per cent of the participants.
An impressive 81 per cent found that their visible pores were less obvious and seven out of 11 saw a significant improvement in their wrinkles.
With vitamins C, A and E as well as calcium and iron, all of which contribute to healthy, glowing skin, it's little wonder the results were so positive.
So if you're wondering what to give the wife or girlfriend this Christmas, don't bother with those pricey creams - try a watercress recipe book instead!
