The USA's closest rival in the long-haul stakes was the Caribbean, which finished second with only 17.8 per cent of the vote, while Australia came in third with 8.7 per cent.
More surprisingly, the US also topped the list of favourite city breaks - a sizeable 20.2 per cent said the Big Apple was their dream city break, with Barcelona and Paris close behind.
The sun, sea and sand of the Spanish costas remains popular. For short-haul holidays, 31.1 per cent preferred Spain to Greece or Italy, and it seems we Brits are keen to make the most of our annual hols because 30.9 per cent of those polled dreamed of cutting out the cooking and cleaning with an all-inclusive break.
