Six-out-of-ten 'not getting five-a-day'

Most of us are still not eating the five portions of fruit or vegetables recommended by the government each day, a survey has revealed.

The poll questioned more than 10,000 people about their eating habits and found that 61 per cent admitted not eating enough fruit and veg, an increase from 56 per cent in 2010.

And the survey also found that more than a third (37 per cent) thought that their diets had got worse since the recession, with price rises and small pay increases limiting their choice.

It also found that one-in-twelve of those quizzed mistakenly thought that items such as Terry's Chocolate Orange, strawberry ice cream and tomato ketchup counted as "one".

The five-a-day advice is issued by the Department of Health because consumption of fruit and vegetables is strongly linked to decreased risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers.

British people still only eat around three-and-a-half 80g portions of fruit and veg a day, which is less than in any other major European country.

The survey was conducted on behalf of the the Health Food Manufacturers' Association.
