Roaring twenties
If you're a big fan of 1920/30s style, you're in luck this year. The deco decade is enjoying something of a resurgence with the silent movie The Artist cleaning up at the BAFTAs and a remake of The Great Gatsby on the cards, not to mention flapper dresses on catwalks including Gucci, Ralph Lauren and Dior.

The roaring twenties have also inspired some of the season's key hair trends. Tap into the deco vibe with a full-volume, messy bob (if you have long hair, simply pin it up for a similar effect), or go for a short sharp bob with stunning short fringe.

Fabulously feminine 60s
Pretty pastels and sixties chic were two key trends on the catwalk for S/S 2012 so it's no wonder hair is enjoying a fabulously feminine feel this spring. Go for a full-on beehive or, for an easy-to-wear take on sixties hair, try Adele-inspired big waves and side bob - or take inspiration from the recent Jean Shrimpton show We'll Take Manhattan (staring Doctor Who actress Karen Gillan) and fall in love with headscarves all over again.

Sporty looks
With London hosting the 2012 Olympics this summer and a distinctly sporty style on the catwalk (thanks to Alexander Wang, Kenzo, Tommy Hilfiger and Jason Wu), there's a certain sporty feel to some of spring's hottest hair trends. For sporty girl chic, think neat, scraped back ponytails and plaits with a slight wet-look finish.

The Chelsea blow-dry
A certain Kate Middleton made the Chelsea blow-dry one of the most popular styles of 2011 and the look is set to remain popular for this spring/summer too. To bring it up to date for 2012, opt for this year's slightly curlier take on the classic Kate style.

Red alert
If you fancy a colour change, red is the colour of the season. To really turn heads, be brave and go for a fiery red with big, full volume curls.
