Updated

For years denim enthusiasts have been insisting that you don't actually need to wash your jeans in order to keep them in tip-top condition, and now it seems they may have been proved right.

A study conducted at an Australian university got participants to wear the same pair of jeans five days a week for three months - and at the end of that time it was discovered that they were remarkably odour free.

Melbourne University student Tullia Jack recruited 30 volunteers to take part in her experiment, with an even split between men and women and an age range of 18 to 56.

Miss Jack explained that the well-worn strides did show some evidence of spills and stains, but that they were far from "socially challenging".

She said: "'You really don't need to wash clothes as often as you think. Stains come and go, they just wear off. They just smell like people."

The study also found that men took more care to try to keep their jeans fresh than women - with regular underwear changes. By the end of the test period there was no discernable difference in stinkiness between the male and female denim.

Apparently many of the test subjects were desperate to put their jeans in the wash during the experiment, but by the end a surprising 50 per cent of them were happy to go on shirking the soap.

The 30 pairs of jeans involved will now be exhibited under the title "Nobody Was Dirty", so visitors can have a sniff for themselves.
