As the cost of living continues to soar, the annual family holiday abroad has been one of the first luxuries to go and Brits are instead turning to the cheaper appeal of a break under canvas.
The Office of National Statistics reports that the number of Britons travelling abroad has dropped by more than a quarter in the last two years. Meanwhile UK camping trip bookings rose by 20 per cent in the last year along, and the Camping and Caravanning Club says Easter bookings are up by a quarter.
In a recent survey by market researchers Mintel, just 20 per cent said they would definitely head for warmer climes this year and strikes threatened by Spanish airport staff and BA workers will no doubt cause many more to think again before booking a holiday abroad.
Robert Louden, director general of the Camping and Caravanning Club, told the Daily Mail: "Holidaying in Britain is more attractive than ever, with camping in particular allowing families to drop their stressful day-to-day routine and spend some quality time together.
So if sun, sea and sand in Spain looks like an impossible dream, perhaps it's time to consider the great outdoors for your holiday this year... we'll keep our fingers crossed for the weather!
