Research by Which? found that premiums for young motorists have risen by a massive 50 per cent over the last year with insurers quoting anything up to £22,000 a year for youngsters.

The consumer watchdog spoke to some 30 companies to try and buy insurance for an 18-year-old male with a 1.4 litre Citroen Xsara. Of those 30 firms, only seven offered cover.

And things weren't much better for a man of 23 - even with a no-claims bonus only nine firms were prepared to offer insurance.

A Which? spokesman said: "The outlays our drivers faced were alarming. Annual premiums for the 18-year-old range from £6,413 with Admiral to an eye-watering £12,470 with Co-operative Insurance.

"Our 23-year-old would pay anywhere from £2,585 with Admiral to £6,277 with Endsleigh."

For the same men driving a two-litre Ford Mondeo living in South East London, the premiums went through the roof - the 18-year-old was quoted £22,000 by igo4insurance.co.uk, while the 23-year-old could expect to pay £10,000 a year if insured with Green Insurance.

These shocking figures will surely force young male drivers to choose one of two options... forget about owning a car, or risk driving without insurance.
