Whether you're looking to blow the budget on a designer dress or save a few pennies on the high street, there are a host of styles to draw the eye.

Retro is big this year with 1940s and '50s styles for the elegant woman, 1970s glitter and sparkle are also big and, of course, you can't go wrong with an LBD.

The hot colours this year are nude tones, rich reds and purples and, as always, black.

Because the key looks include sequins, draping and one shouldered styles, there are plenty of options to ensure that you pick something flattering whatever your size. After all, if you want to look fabulous you'll need to feel confident.

For those of you with pins to die for, short dresses are everywhere - Miss Selfridge have a black vest dress (£70) embellished with sparkly silver that will ensure you stand out from any nearby LBDs and their one shoulder dress with oh-so-glam feather trim (£50) is the perfect little cocktail dress.

At the pricier end of the market, All Saints' Isis Mini Dress (£250) is similar to Miss Selfridge's vest dress but the fabulous art deco sparkle adds a touch of rock star glam.

If, however, you would prefer something with a little flow, a chiffon drape may be more appealing. Asos are currently stocking a one-shoulder chiffon drape (£48) in nude.

And at Topshop you can get your hands on a cute one-shouldered chiffon midi dress (£75) giving you asymmetric length. Or, if you would prefer something less plain, New Look's beaded halter-neck dress (£69.99) provides a floaty chiffon skirt with a bead and sequin embellished top so that you can have the best of both worlds.

Short and sassy not your style? Fear not - the maxi dress remains popular this festive season and from sexy and slinky to 1940s glamour there are plenty to choose from.

The embellished Lipsy maxi dress, available from Asos (£80), stays on trend with one shoulder and a leg split for added sex appeal and, if you're feeling more daring, the O&O Black Lace maxi from Urban Outfitters (£48) can easily be glammed up with some bold bling.

Grecian styles are also on the hot list, as one Dannii Minogue keeps on proving, and if you are strapped for cash, you might like to try the Peacocks Grecian Embeliished dress at £35.

For those of you who favour understated Christmas glamour, Warehouse's Deco Block maxi dress (£80) in plain black is stunning with some similarly understated (but nonetheless gorgeous) style.

French Connection also have a variety of 1940s and '50s-inspired maxis that just ooze old-style Hollywood glamour but their hottest dress for the party season looks likely to be the Samantha (£160) - a gloriously sequinned fitted dress with bold square shoulders that is guaranteed to light up the room.
