Moonlight and American Honey have received the most nominations for the Independent Spirit Film Awards, the ceremony see as a predictor for Oscars success.
Both films have six nods including best feature, where they will compete in the category against Manchester By The Sea, Jackie and Chronic.
The previous three best feature winners have gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars - Spotlight, Birdman and 12 Years A Slave.
Natalie Portman is nominated for best actress for her role as former US first lady Jackie Kennedy in the film Jackie. She will compete with Annette Bening for 20th Century Women, Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Ruth Negga for Loving.
Nominations for American Honey include best female lead for newcomer Sasha Lane and best supporting male for Shia LaBeouf, while Moonlight's nominations include cinematography, editing and screenplay.
Manchester By The Sea's five nominations include best actor for Casey Affleck and best supporting actor for Lucas Hedges.
La La Land - an early favourite for Oscar success - starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone was not eligible due to its production budget of more than 30 million US dollars. Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals and Denzel Washington's Fences were also ineligible.
The winners will be revealed at the ceremony on February 25, a day before the Academy Awards are presented.
