Drake surpasses Michael Jackson with record 13 American Music Award nominations


Canadian singer Drake has scored 13 American Music Award nominations, breaking the record for the most nods in a single year.

The Hotline Bling star surpassed Michael Jackson's previous record of 11 nominations.

Rihanna picked up seven mentions while Adele and Justin Bieber both scored five.

Adele, Drake, Rihanna and the Biebs will compete against Beyonce, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Twenty One Pilots, Carrie Underwood and The Weeknd for the title of 2016 artist of the year.

Adele's hit album 25 will compete against Drake's Views and Justin Bieber's Purpose for favourite album (pop/rock), while her number one single Hello is nominated alongside Bieber's Love Yourself and Drake's chart-topper One Dance featuring Wizkid and Kyla for favourite song (pop/rock).

Adele also received a nod for favourite female artist (pop/rock), alongside Rihanna and Selena Gomez, while Drake will compete against Bieber and The Weeknd for favourite male.

Former One Direction star Zayn Malik has been nominated for new artist of the year, alongside DNCE, The Chainsmokers, Shawn Mendes and Alessia Cara.

The 2016 American Music Awards will be presented at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on November 20.
