The 60-minute drama, which airs on BBC One on Christmas Day, sees Peter as the Doctor teaming up with an investigative journalist, played by Charity Wakefield, and a superhero named Grant to save New York from a deadly alien threat.

Grant will be played by Orphan Black actor Justin Chatwin, while Matt will return in his role as Nardole.

The costume worn by Grant in the upcoming Christmas special was also posted on Twitter by BBC America, which will air the new series in the US next year.

The cast of Class hugged on stage after new trailers for the series were played to hundreds of "Whovians" gathered at Madison Square Garden.

The show, set in the fictional school Coal Hill Academy in Shoreditch, London, features Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah in the four lead roles.

The opening episode, which features Peter as the Doctor, will air on BBC Three from October 22.

BBC America also released footage from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, an adaptation of the novels from The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy author Douglas Adams.

The murder mystery, which stars Lord Of The Rings actor Elijah Wood and English actor Samuel Barnett, airs on BBC America on October 22 and on Netflix in the UK from December.
