Sarah Paulson finally won an Emmy and fans were absolutely ecstatic

Updated:

Sarah Paulson picked up the prize for outstanding lead actress in a limited series for her performance in The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.

For the 41-year-old actress, it was her first ever Emmy win, and it was a long time coming, according to most critics and her legion of fans.

She had previously been nominated every year since 2012 and never quite managed to pick up the prize, but now - for her portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark - her time has come.

Fans of the US star were absolutely giddy on Twitter as they celebrated their "queen" winning her first Emmy.

And one seriously cute tweet came from Sarah's girlfriend, actress Holland Taylor.

On stage, Sarah said described Marcia as a "complicated, whip smart, giant-hearted mother of two" who dedicated herself to "righting an unconscionable wrong".

Sarah had attended the Emmys with Marcia, and they certainly looked like old pals on the red carpet.

Elsewhere, the popular show scored some other successes as Courtney B Vance was named outstanding actor in a limited series for his portrayal of defence lawyer Johnnie Cochrane.

He beat his co-star Cuba Gooding Jr, who played OJ Simpson, and British stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston to the award.
