Johnny Depp to hunt the killers of Tupac and Biggie in new film Labyrinth

He's played Captain Jack Sparrow, Sweeney Todd, Donnie Brasco and Whitey Bulger, but now Johnny Depp is taking on the role of someone on the right side of the law.

The 53-year-old is set to play Detective Russell Poole in Labyrinth, the true story of the investigator who worked the murder of The Notorious B.I.G., theorising that his death was a retaliation for the murder of Tupac Shakur one year earlier.

The story, adapted from Randall Sullivan's book of the same name, will be helmed by Brad Furman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Poole's investigation led him to believe Biggie's death had ties to a group of "gangsta cops" affiliated with Death Row Records and the Bloods.

The murders of Tupac and Biggie were the unfortunate climax of the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop beef of the 1990s, which spilled briefly into the naughties, and are still the source of a lot of intrigue given the lack of answers the investigation dug up.
