Zendaya's Spider-Man: Homecoming role has 'leaked' and Twitter has gone nuts with glee

It's being widely reported that Zendaya's role in the forthcoming Spider-Man reboot movie has been leaked, and that she's set to star as iconic character Mary Jane Watson.

Fans have gone wild with enthusiasm over the news, with both comic book devotees and those who idolise the young actress and singer sharing their views on Twitter.

It was confirmed back in March that the 19-year-old Disney star would be appearing opposite leading man Tom Holland, but in the role of one of his classmates, Michelle.

But, according to The Wrap, this is actually just a clever ploy: in Spider-Man: Homecoming, she will play the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man's love interest.

The site claimed that two sources in the know revealed that a draft of the script showed Zendaya's character "dropping clues" to her real identity as MJ.

Kirsten Dunst famously portrayed Mary Jane in the Sam Raimi-directed Spider-Man films, starring Tobey Maguire as the superhero.

And, while these claims about Zendaya's big role have not been confirmed by Sony or Marvel Studios, comic book devotees have obviously reacted to the news. They're really quite thrilled about it.

Of course, there has been some criticism over her casting - as there is with any movie casting news - but this has all been given shade by pretty much everybody else.

An early preview of Spider-Man: Homecoming was shown by director Jon Watts at Comic-Con last month, who has described the forthcoming blockbuster film as a "high school movie". It is set for release next year.
