Halle Berry turns 50: a look back through the age-defying star's life

Happy birthday Halle Berry! The actress has unbelievably hit the big 5-0.

She joins stars including Salma Hayek and Cindy Crawford in hitting the milestone in 2016, although the beautiful trio could all pass for decades younger than their years.

Halle told Extra last year that she wasn't going to let a number define her, instead she'd be ringing in her fifth decade with her five best friends in the Caribbean.

"We're going to have a cleansing, we're going to jump in the ocean butt-naked and have a spiritual moment and bond and connect as women," she said.

To celebrate her big birthday, here's a look back at the perennially-youthful Halle over the years.

Ohio-born Halle competed in the Miss USA contest in 1986, winning first runner-up. She went on to take sixth place in the Miss World pageant later that year, becoming the first African American to ever enter the contest.

Halle married her first husband, former baseball player David Justice, in 1993. They met after she gave a reporter her phone number to give to David when they told her he was a fan. The couple divorced four years later.

Halle went for a very casual bikini look at the premiere of her first X-Men movie, in which she played weather-controlling mutant Storm. She arrived alongside then-boyfriend Eric Benet, who she would marry the following year. However, they separated just two years later.

Halle won the best actress Oscar for her lead role in romantic drama Monster's Ball, co-starring Billy Bob Thornton and Heath Ledger. She is the only woman of colour to win a best actress Academy Award to date. The same year she joined the enviable list of "Bond Girls" as Jinx opposite Pierce Brosnan in Die Another Day.

She fronted her own superhero movie as Catwoman but it was badly panned by critics. Halle showed she at least had a sense of humour when she went in person to accept the Razzie Award for worst actress for the role.

Despite her turn in Catwoman, Halle earned herself a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame in 2007 and a place as one of the world's highest-paid actresses, commanding an estimated $10 million (£7.7 million) per film.

Halle gave birth to her first child, Nahla, in March 2008 at the age of 41 during a relationship with Canadian model Gabriel Aubry. The pair dated for five years before splitting in 2010. Halle began a relationship with French actor Olivier Martinez soon after and a highly publicised custody battle followed when she contemplated moving to France with Nahla.

Halle married Olivier in July 2013 and they welcomed son Maceo in October that year. The pregnancy at age 46 came as a complete shock, with Halle saying: "I didn't think it was possible at my age, honestly." In October last year, the couple announced they were divorcing.
