Anton Yelchin's Star Trek role will not be recast

Anton Yelchin's role in the Star Trek movies will not be recast following his death, producer JJ Abrams has said.

The actor, who played Pavel Chekov in the rebooted sci-fi movies, died in a freak car accident in June at the age of 27.

He will be seen in the third film - Star Trek Beyond - when it is released on Friday, but with a fourth film recently confirmed, JJ told Postmedia Network that his role won't be filled by a new actor in the future.

"I would say there's no replacing him," he said.

"There's no recasting. I can't possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better."

Film-makers have yet to decide what to do with the character so it isn't known whether Chekov might be killed off.

JJ said: "I have thought about it, we're working on it, and it's too early to talk about it."

The actor died on June 19 after his Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled down his driveway and he was pinned against a letter box pillar and a security fence.
