Viewers left stunned by EastEnders' shock death twist

EastEnders' Paul Coker was killed off in Monday night's episode in a huge shock twist.

Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) were led to believe it was Phil's son Ben (Harry Reid) who had been involved in an incident and was in a "critical condition" in hospital after a receiving a phone call from the police.

The pair raced to the hospital where they were asked to identify the body of the now-deceased young man.

As they prepared to view the body, a heart-broken Phil told Ian: "I just wish it was me. I don't want to see."

But viewers were stunned when it was revealed that it was Ben's boyfriend Paul, played by Jonny Labey, who was lying cold in the hospital bed.

Ben's whereabouts are still a mystery after the pair were last seen heading off for a night out together before the tragedy occurred.

It had been revealed in April that Jonny was due to quit the show, but bosses had kept his means of exit quiet.

Fans were left in shock by the twist.

Although some saw it coming, especially with the mix-up with the mobile phone and tattoo.

His death left fans wondering what had happened to Ben.

Although one or two of the more heartless viewers couldn't help joking about Paul's undertaker grandad Les.

EastEnders returns on Tuesday to BBC One at 7.30pm.
