'Weight thing' was such a big deal, says Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus

Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus has admitted that the focus on her weight was difficult to deal with while she competed on the singing show.

The singer, who won the series in 2003, said she struggled with all the attention on her appearance.

Sporting pink curly hair on ITV's Lorraine, she said: "It was difficult, everybody wants to lose weight, everybody wants to look the best they can look.

"At the time I was only 24 years old, I had never been to London in my life, it was mad.

"The weight thing was such a big deal and I've been up and down and I've lost weight and gained weight and it will always be a part of me, even if I was to lose all the weight and be a skinny minnie, it would still somehow be there."

Michelle, 36, said that while she is happy and healthy, she still plans to shed pounds for her upcoming wedding.

She told the chat show host: "I'm going to wire my jaws up, I'm getting married next year and I'm not getting married at this weight. Everybody wants to lose weight for their wedding dress, then I'm going to go on honeymoon and earn all my money back."

The Glaswegian singer will take her one-woman comedy show Pop Goes The Idol to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe later this summer and said she still has fond memories of her time on the show.

She said: "I love it, it changed my life. I've been known to have the odd party and at 2am accidentally on purpose put the Pop Idol DVD on for the guests. It was an amazing time."

In her show, Michelle plays her exaggerated alter-ego, saying: "She thinks she's an international megastar but she opens Lidl in Glasgow. This character is absolutely bonkers and is everything I would want to be if I was that way inclined."
